Union's Summer Runs On A Thursday-To-Sunday Loop, Not A Scattered Calendar
If you have lived in Union for more than a season or two, you probably keep a mental map of summer that treats each event as its own errand. Concert on Thursday. Farmers market on its own day. A new restaurant on Route 22 that you keep meaning to try. What has quietly happened in 2026 is that those pieces have tightened into a weekly rhythm running from Thursday night through Sunday morning, anchored to two addresses on Morris Avenue and one commercial strip on Route 22.
The point of this post is not to list everything happening in town. It is to argue that the loop already exists, and that treating it as one connected weekend rather than four separate outings is the shift worth making before Labor Day.
The Township of Union and the Recreation Department brought the Summer Concert Series back to Rabkin Park for July 2026, and this year the lineup is tighter than last year's improvised feel. All concerts are scheduled for Thursdays from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM and feature prominent tribute acts: July 9 Motor City Revue (Motown Tribute), July 16 Freestyle Forever (80's Tribute), July 23 Never Say Goodbye (Bon Jovi Tribute), and July 30 Big Hix (Country Tribute). Blankets and chairs are recommended, and food trucks are on-site vending. Admission and parking are free.
Two details make this the anchor rather than a nice-to-have. First, the food-truck setup means you can skip dinner beforehand without penalty, which is not true of most outdoor concert series in the area. Second, in case of rain, the concerts move indoors to Union High School, so the calendar holds even when the forecast does not. If you have been treating these as an occasional drop-in, the more efficient move this year is to default to attending and cancel only if you have something better.
The season did not start there. The Annual Fourth of July Spectacular took place at Biertuempfel Park on July 4, with the night kicking off at 7:30 PM with a concert featuring The UpTown Band. That was the opener. Rabkin is where the series lives.
The other half of the loop sits on Morris Avenue at the Union Arts Center Plaza. The 2026 season of The Market at Union kicked off on Thursday, June 4th at the Union Arts Center Plaza and parking lot, located at 1980 Morris Ave. The Market has grown into the daytime counterpart to the Thursday concerts, and it operates on the same physical corridor.
Saturday mornings on that corridor now belong to a fitness program. The annual "Fitness at the Plaza" outdoor workout series returns on select Saturday mornings from July 11th through September 26th, 2026, from 9 am to 11 am at UAC Plaza. Free, outdoors, and stacked on the same address you were at Thursday night. Someone who lives within walking distance of Union Center can effectively use one location for three different weekly reasons.
The evening use of UAC Plaza is expanding too. The DMK Black Box Theater is hosting an open-mic evening filled with music, poetry, and storytelling, and the Township, the Union Arts Center, and Apollo's Own DJ Jess are staging a comedy showcase at UAC. The Plaza has become the closest thing Union has to a programmed downtown block.
For years the Union restaurant conversation was either the same handful of long-runners or a rotating cast of Route 22 chain openings that never quite justified the trip. Two 2026 arrivals changed the composition.
The first is national news that happens to be in your town. The southern burger slider chain Krystal is touching down in the Northeast for the first time ever with a new location in Union County, with Super Bowl XLVI Champion and former New York Giant Victor Cruz, a brand partner, leading the opening at 2200 Route 22 E. in Union on March 2. The fast-food restaurant features a dedicated turn lane, drive-thru window, and indoor dining area. Along with Krystal's full menu, the Union restaurant offers an exclusive New Jersey-inspired lineup developed by Cruz. Whether or not sliders are your thing, this is the first time in a long time that a Union opening pulled press from outside the county.
The second is quieter and probably matters more if you have out-of-town guests coming. Bar Rocco, chef Rocco DiSpirito's restaurant, has been drawing reviews that read more like special-occasion writeups than neighborhood-spot writeups. One Yelp reviewer celebrating an anniversary noted seeing Rocco DiSpirito greeting a customer, and highlighted the Colossal Shrimp Cocktail, Oysters "Rocco-feller," Sunday Gravy Lasagna, and short rib with pappardelle. That is a different pitch than Union has typically made.
Beyond those two, Yelp's April 2026 "Hot and New" list for Union includes Namkeen, Paper Bag, honeygrow, Chullo's Restaurant, Silk Noodle Bar, Thai Mex Station, With Love Valentina, The Chapped Cheese, and Dong Bei. The pattern to notice is not any one cuisine but the shift in density. Union used to have a few notable independents scattered across town. It now has a cluster of them opened within roughly a year of each other, which changes what "trying something new this weekend" costs you in driving time.
Most of the summer loop is recurring. Two events are not, and both are worth planning around.
The first turns a mile of road into a pedestrian corridor. On Sundays June 28 and September 20, 9 to 11 am, a free event transforms a mile of public space for pedestrians and pets, with walking, biking, skateboarding, playing, and the Be Running Club on-site. If you have been meaning to actually meet neighbors from streets over from yours, this is the two-hour window designed to make that happen.
The second is the August evening that closes out the summer social calendar. The annual Girls' Night Out event returns on Friday, August 7, featuring a high-energy country theme, "Wild & Free," bringing a night of live music, interactive activities, and local shopping to the heart of Union Center. It slots into the same Union Center footprint as the Thursday-Saturday programming, which means the merchants and venues you have been visiting all summer are the ones putting the night on.
Here is the rhythm reduced to a single grid, using the specific 2026 programming and addresses. If you already live in Union, the value of the table is not information. It is the visual proof that you do not have to plan around four separate calendars.

Mayor Patricia Guerra-Frazier described the Summer Concert Series as a beloved community tradition, and it is fair to read the rest of the programming as an attempt to extend that tradition across more of the week. The Township is doing the coordination work. The residents' job is to notice it has happened.
Two things are true about Union's summer that were not true even two years ago. The programming has consolidated around specific addresses, and the food scene has enough new arrivals to justify a weekend spent inside town rather than driving to Millburn or Montclair. Both trends outlast July.
The Market at Union runs into fall. Fitness at the Plaza runs through September 26. The second Open Road date is September 20. Bar Rocco and the Yelp-list restaurants are not going anywhere.
